posted by David in Health, Organic, Recipes

I would like to introduce you to Lorraine Ornelas the owner and head chef of Luscious Lorraines in Palm Desert. I have been wanting to feature Lorraine on our blog for a long time. For the simple fact that if it was not for Lorraine all of us at Body Deli would probably starve. Luscious Lorraines is right next door to Body Deli. It is super convieneint. Lorraine’s food is flavorful and super clean. From her fabulous soups, salads, wraps and smoothies we keep our bodies fueled with the best nutrition so we can make the best nutrition for your skin.
.

Here is an article that Lorriane wrote about her story. Next time you are in the Palm Springs area, visiting Lorraine’s for lunch it is a must after shopping at the Body Deli boutique. One of our favorite soups is her raw mango gazpacho it is to die for below is the recipe!

“Luscious Lorraine’s Organic Juice & Foods”  by Lorraine Ornelas
.
How it Happened

.
There is no mystery to healthy eating. My answer is organic, whole foods in their       natural form, as close to nature as possible. I came to that realization, like many people do, because at the age of 24, I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness, breast cancer.
.
Taking Action
.
What I changed about my eating was everything from the M.A.D. / S.A.D. diet I was raised on (Mexican-American-Diet/Standard-American-Diet), supplemented with heavily processed “junk” foods common in modern American diets. I began educating myself on organic, whole foods. The importance of an organic whole foods diet became evident to me, it became my way of life.
.
Back to Basics
.
Organic, whole foods, what are they?
.
Organic foods are produced according to regulated standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, sewage sludge or human waste, and no GMO (genetically modified organisms, organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered). Livestock are reared without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones, fed organically grown grains and in many cases raised free-range, free to roam and graze on open range grasslands. (We use organic free-range meats at Luscious Lorraine’s.)
.
 Why are they important?
.
Organic foods rate higher in vitamins, minerals, and other nutritive plant compounds than conventional foods, because they are grown in rich, nutritious soil. A vegetable or fruit is only as good as the soil it grows in. “I yam what yam”.
.
Some studies have shown that tomatoes, beans, peppers and beets grown on organic farms can contain ten times more mineral content. The biggest study ever of organic food was completed in 2007 and found that organic fruits and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants. The 4-year study was funded by the European Union and was the largest of its kind ever undertaken. Another study reported that organic crops contain more phytonutrients, plant compounds such as enzymes, antioxidants and bioflavonoids which strengthen the immune system and protect the body from disease. Is preparation of food important?
.

Yes! Food is energy fuel, loaded with nutrients for our bodies, so proper preparation is important. Here are a few simple tips we use at Luscious Lorraine’s: ~ Soak grains, rice, nuts, beans, seeds; helps release any natural protective coatings making nutrients more available and digestion easier.

~ Use purified or alkaline-charged water; better for you and makes tastier vegetables.
~ Use stainless steel pots and pans; no leaching of toxic elements. (at Luscious Lorraine’s our stainless steel pots and pans we use for vegetables, are never used with animal products out of respect for our vegan and vegetarian customers).
~ Use pink sea salt only, iodized table salt is a toxin to the body.
~ Prepare your food with gratitude and happiness, have fun, emotions transfer energy.
.

Building Community through Food
.

I have always had this awareness that I was suppose to use my time on this Planet to help…and my passion for cooking and my love for bringing people together was my perfect recipe…”how do I get healthy, organic, nutritious food to everybody?” and that is how it all began. The evolution of this awareness is currently manifested in  Luscious Lorraine’s Organic Juice & Food Bar. Now we’re taking it to The Next Level.
.

Thanks to our community for their support and to my great staff! And a special thanks to Laura Laffranchini (owner of Harvest Health Foods) for her like-mindedness and for saying yes when I asked her if I could put a deli in her store.

Lipstick Jungle’s Lindsay Price visits The Body Deli

posted by David in Celebrity

.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see Lindsay Price at our store in Palm Desert. I have to admit my new indulgence is hulu.com. I love this website, there are hundreds of great tv shows, all for free! I came across Lipstick Jungle a few weeks ago. I saw it advertised on tv a few times, but it did not really grab my attention. I started to watch it on hulu, and OMG, I LOVE it. It is such a great show, it is the brain child of SATC’s Candace Bushnell. I love Victory Ford, Lindsay Price’s fabulous alter ego on Lipstick. She is a hot fashion designer with attitude, along with co-stars Kim Raver a sleek cougar that falls for a guy half her age, and the eternally gorgeous Brooke Shields a super savvy studio executive. Together they all have great chemistry and in my humble opinion is a better show than SATC.

.

I was blown away to see Lindsay yesterday! She looks every bit as gorgeous in person as she does on the small screen. I have been hearing rumors about the show being cancelled, well I got the scoop from the show’s star herself. The official status of Lipstick is that they have 2 episodes left, and no decision to cancel the show has been made. It all depends on the ratings of the last 2 epidsodes. So if you love the show make sure you watch it, please pass it around and help save this great show! Please don’t just tivo it, it makes a difference in the ratings to watch it’s original airing.

.

Lindsay was so cute, she was introduced to Body Deli products a few years ago at WeCare Spa. She love the line and her favorites are the Blueberry Fusion Scrub, Vital-C Serum and especially the Firming Flax Eye Cream. I hope to see much more of the big city escapades of Victory, Nico and Wendy!

Blog Review - Creme de la Rose is superior to Creme de la Mer

posted by David in News

.

.
Our favorite Boston Beauty blogger has just reviewed our bestselling product Creme de la Rose. Creme de la Rose is our most precious product made with the finest ingredients that will rejuvenate and bring a youthful dewy glow to any complexion. It has been a cult favorite for years, and as I, myself am also a beauty fanatic I have tried everything out on the market. Yes, I did once buy a jar of Creme de la Mer, I had to try it. Well, I must say it was rather disappointing, I love texture, especially luxurious creams that feel like spun silk. Creme de la Met felt like paste. It was thick, and not very elegant. After warming it between the hands it was ok, a little on the greasy side, but hey millions of women swear by it, so what can I say. But in my humble opinion our Creme de la Rose is superior in every way. We are thrilled that other beauty connoisseurs feel the same way.

Show_image_in_imgtagNew Brahmin Review - Creme de la Rose
.
Let’s face it: 24 years of smiling, tanning, boozing, nights out and dieting (or binging) have taken a toll on my skin.  That’s right, I’m 24 and I have not escaped the fate of "happiness wrinkles", similar to "fun fat" if you will.  And while I can’t turn back the hands of time and relive my life healthily, I can surely slather myself in the healthiest products I can find in hopes of reversing my signs of…aging (GASP).
.

I tried not to look surprised when The Body Deli’s Creme de la Rose was donated to such a cause.  That night, I went home to dip into my new found fountain of youth.  My initial reaction: not to keen on the smell, but it went on grease free and icy cold.  The next morning my typically frightful morning appearance was slightly less horrifying when I felt how smooth my skin was.  I decided out with Creme de La Mer, in with Creme de la Rose.
.
Come to find out, each batch of Creme de la Rose is handmade, taking over 24 hours to make.  All ingredients proved quite impressive, but certified Organic Bulgarian Rose oil (that sells at over $4000/lb!) is their showstopper.  It has apparently been used for centuries for its therapeutic healing and regenerating qualities.
.

After a few days of use, I could truly see a difference and the smell had become much more enjoyable.   Tip: I’ve been mixing a dab of foundation and a dab of Creme de la Rose on my fingertips and then applying to face.  It makes your foundation go on dewier than ever!
.

While eternal youth doesn’t come cheap (at $75 for a 2oz tub), it’s hard to deny a product that truly works.  And although I’m not crawling around in diapers with a martini just yet, next time you see a girl at the bar that is screaming underage drinker (unless you’re at Sissy K’s or the like), come say hi!

Vogue Japan - Kate Hudson is into Body Deli

posted by David in News

.

Japan is so sexy. We love the food, the style and come on the Harajuku Girls - Gwen Stefani knew what she was doing. We have many fans of Body Deli in Japan. One day we hope to have a store on Ginza, but until then we ship on ice to Japan all the time. Vogue Nippon did a story on Body Deli in their upcoming issue. The feature was what is hot on the Hollywood radar. Body Deli is certainly red hot in Hollywood. Kate Hudson, one of our favorite celebrity fans is just as popular in Japan as she is in the states. Plus the Japanese edition of Vogue is so much better than the US edition. The pictures, ads and quality are outrageous. If you have a chance to grab a copy please do, it is popping with eye candy.

Blog Review - The Organic Beauty Expert (Light Facial Emulsion)

posted by David in Reviews

.
Okay everyone, The Organic Beauty Expert is the definitive resources for organic beauty. It can be really difficult to find a reliable resource for organic beauty products and especially eco-friendly / sustainable. I must say that this sight rocks my organic world. I feel totally enlightened to the organic side of beauty. Since I spend almost all of my time focused on my own brand it is so refreshing to see all of our community in one place. Andrea Kane is one of the superstars in the organic beauty universe. Check out her blog you wont want to leave! Andrea reviewed one of our favorite products, Light Facial Emulsion. When I read her post I blushed, she made me sound so important. Humility is a virture, LOL.

.
Lightemulsion high res The Body Deli’s new “Flash Flood Light Facial Emulsion” moisturizer is a revolutionary new product designed to retain skin’s moisture while controlling excess oil.
.

Inspired by one of Founder & Cosmetic Chef David Parker’s whole body detoxes using ionic minerals, he discovered that a certain mixture of minerals not only made his skin soft topically but, even more dramatically, it also reduced the oiliness of his skin. The “light bulb” moment occurred when he realized he could formulate a product using ionic minerals that would hydrate, soften, and smooth the skin while controlling excess oil and breakouts. Perfecting the formulation, which has been a two-year process, took longer than any other Body Deli product and absolutely represents one of the most unique cosmetic products on the market today.
.

As with any Body Deli product, it contains no harsh ingredients.  It is totally natural, free of all BPO (Benzyl Peroxide) harsh acids, toxic "oil" free emollients, salicylic acid or paraben-based preservatives.

SEA CUCUMBER GELEE
.
This is one unique facial product that I have enjoyed using for the past month now, The Body Deli Sea Cucumber Gelee. What intrigued me most about this product was the Fresh cells of cucumber along with the Hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that is used in some injectable wrinkle fillers and skin care creams.
.

My skin literally drinks this gelee up. I love the cool icy feel of this on my skin, it’s simply amazing! My skin feels so smooth and hydrated. I love the fresh crisp clean scent of cucumbers. This is a definite must have if you are looking for a healthier, radiant complexion.

Instructions:

For best results use this facial hydrator daily to replenish lost moisture and to create a well hydrated, dewy healthy appearance to the skin.

MANDARIN INFUSION BOTANICAL BUTTER SCRUB

This is one truly blissful pampering body treat. Mandarin Infusion is a very special one of a kind body scrub. It is formulated with rich organic African Shea, organic Cocoa and organic Virgin Coconut Butter. This trendy product has a perfect combination of Mandarin-Orange with delicious Vanilla Cream and just a hint of Jasmine. A unique invigorating scrub that will be sure to rejuvenate and transform the texture of your skin.

Nothing changes your skin quite effectively as this scrub does. It’s gentle on the skin, not harsh like some scrubs are. The added body butters soften and leave the skin feeling silky smooth! Simply one of the best body scrubs I have used. After this one is all gone, I am going to purchase the Coconut Cream one. I just love the scent of coconut!

Used regularly, this scrub will help to alleviate dry, rough skin and create an incredibly smooth feel.

Blogger Review - Fig & Sage (Fruit Enzyme Smoothie Masque)

Fig and Sage is a great blog about living an organic and eco-conscious lifestyle. It really is a great blog, it is one of the best resources for everything green. I give this blog 2 green thumbs up way up. I actually spent over an hour on the site looking at different companies that are making going green a lot more fashionable.
.

By the way they have some really great things to say about our super fresh, Fruit Smoothie Enzyme Masque. it is good enough to eat.

.

WOW! That’s all I can say about this amazing botanical facial masque from The Body Deli.
.

Ok - who am I kidding - I can say way more than that…
.

When I received this product from The Body Deli in a dry-ice packaged box a couple of weeks ago, I was intrigued by the sound of it and had every intention to try it out right away. At the time I was desperately trying to get my face under control (I have been having major breakouts lately) so I was sticking to just one product line. One night, I opened my fridge and heard the Fruit Smoothie facial masque calling to me, so I excitedly took it to my bathroom and started to apply the cool, sweet-smelling goodness to my face. Within an instant I fell in love with the smell of the masque. I think the name is pretty self-explanatory, but let’s just say a daydream to the tropics is easy to achieve with this stuff all over your face. I only left it on about 15 minutes (long enough to get ready for bed) but the entire time I felt a little tingle - a key sign that this mask was actually working. What happened after I removed the mask is what amazed me though - my skin was gorgeous! Seriously - beautiful, glowing, smooth, fresh. (I haven’t used words like that for my face in months.) The next morning I woke up to the same beautiful skin and applying makeup to my face was a total treat. I was officially hooked.
.

The Body Deli has revolutionized skincare by incorporating raw, fresh and organic ingredients into their products. Many of their products require refrigeration because they are made from living foods, which can take some getting used to but it is well worth it for what you get in return. Using green papaya enzymes and soy amino acid, the Fruit Smoothie Masque offers a natural and effective alternative to harsher exfoliating treatments. With other ingredients, like grapefruit seed extract, Japanese honeysuckle, rose hips and honey - this product is literally food for your skin. As you can imagine, we eat this stuff up {pun intended.}
.

If you’d like to try The Body Deli products yourself, now is the time. They have offered our readers a special discount of 10% your online order if you place it within the next 7 days. Just enter FIGSAGE in the promo code box at checkout from now until November 20 to get your discount, then sit back and wait for your products to arrive at your door! Beautiful.

Dr. Jeff - Health & Wellness (A Toxic World?)

posted by David in Health

I am a huge fan of detoxification. Funny enough it is actually what got me interested in natural cosmetics. I was born 6 weeks premature which resulted in underdeveloped lungs. I had to live with asthma most of my childhood. I still painfully remember the worst feeling in the world was to have an asthma attack and not have my inhaler around. I was a stubborn adolescent and did not really put much faith in authority. I felt I knew better and needed to research and through trial and error seek the answers to my questions myself. I know that there must have been alternatives to being dependent on a drug for the rest of my life. That simply was not an option for me. So then started my path toward researching health.
.
I must have read hundreds of books and did so many workshops, I got burnt out on information. At some point you just got to do it, no amount of book information will replace good old fashioned experience. So then I changed my diet, went vegan for 1 year then slowly transitioned to a 100% raw food diet and got really into healthy skin care (hence was that beginning of my obsession with natural cosmetics). I started to feel a major shift on all levels of my life. I remember my first cleanse was using the supplements from Arise and Shine. It was called their master cleanse and WOW what a relief. In one week I released a lifetime of impacted mucoid plaque from my colon.
.
From then on I have done many cleanses, fasts, colonics etc. It is just natural for me now to cleanser once or twice a year. Plus the best part I haven’t used my inhaler for over 10 years! This stuff works! Dr. Jeff our health and wellness contributor has posted a new thought provoking article about facing the toxicity in our "real" world and why we need to take responsability for our own internal environment. Go green take care of your internal landscape first.

DR. JEFF - A Toxic World?
.
Some people think that detoxification is a “new age” idea. For me it isn’t, but I decided to at least look and see what shows up. First stop, PubMed, an Internet site put out by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. Entering detoxification into their site search brings up 15,823 citations of studies done on detoxification. Pretty impressive. Next stop, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. A quick look brings up 981 citations of studies involving detoxification. Not as impressive, but still noteworthy. Last stop, the World Health Organization’s website. A quick search here brings up 1250 citations. All-in-all, detoxification seems to be a worldwide concern.
.
So, is detoxification an issue? If detoxification were not an issue, then we could eat all of the mercury laden fish that we wanted to. We could breathe polluted air without consideration. We could smoke 10 packs of cigarettes each day for a life time and not suffer as a result. We could dump all the waste that we wanted to into the oceans, rivers, and streams. We could do away with water filtration plants, waste recycling, and all the controls surrounding pollution. We wouldn’t need life-saving antioxidants in hospital and clinical settings. I think that it is self-evident that detoxification is an issue. It is a primary function of all cells, tissues, and organs in the human body and all other living organisms, as well as the planet itself.
.

Detoxification is a necessity for life on the planet to go on existing. Without detoxification, we would suffer and die in our own wastes. The largest organ in the body is a detoxification organ, the skin. The next largest organs - the liver, lungs, large intestine, and kidneys - also deal heavily with detoxification. Detoxification sites and pathways are everywhere in our body’s tissues. As an organism, we come armed for detoxification.
.

Some people think that the body is adequately equipped for detoxification, but if it were, we wouldn’t have words like carcinogen, teratogens, reproductive toxicants, and endocrine disruptors. These are chemicals that create disease and dysfunction in the body because the body isn’t able to remove them. The human body was not made to handle the toxic load that it has to handle in today’s environment, and the environment wasn’t made to handle the toxic load that humans have dumped upon it. Of the 100,000+ chemicals in use worldwide, some 5000 of them are produced in high volumes in excess of 1 million pounds per year. Only a small percentage of these have been tested for environmental and human impact.
.

The human body is like a sponge that soaks up hundreds, perhaps thousands of chemicals. In testing done on babies, the number of toxins present at birth has been shown to be around 200-300. Scientists estimate that everyone alive today has a toxic load of at least 700 contaminants. Chemicals that have been outlawed years ago can still show up in the body’s tissues decades later. What goes in, doesn’t necessarily come out.
.

How we manage the toxic load of the body can have a great impact on our health and the health of our children. Reducing exposure to toxins is a great place to start. The home should be a safe place for us to retreat to and renew ourselves. We should eliminate, or greatly reduce, our exposure to chemicals through the foods we eat, the beverages we drink, and the air we breathe. Lotions, shampoos, conditioners, detergents, and household cleaners should be organic or biodegradable. Our water and air should be filtered whenever possible. Food should be our medicine. Routine sweating via saunas and hot baths is an established practice in many cultures that makes use of the skin and its detoxification abilities.
.

One can work with healthcare practitioners to investigate ways to assist the body in reducing its toxic burden. Nutrients can be useful in boosting the body’s resources for antioxidants. A supplement like N-acetyl-cysteine helps to replenish the stores of one of the body’s most abundant antioxidants, glutathione. Glutathione help to decrease the oxidative stress created by the toxic load we carry and expose ourselves to continuously.
.

So, perhaps detoxification is a “new age” concept, but more importantly, I believe that it should be a part of a new age of personal responsibility for our health and how our choices play a role in determining the quality of the life we live.
