Grand Opening Spa Terre – Riviera Resort & Spa
-The opening of the dramatic Spa Terre ( not to be confused with the the Spa Terra designed by David Bury & Company Architects ) at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa which I have yet to visit because the public relations firm tells me they are completely booked – brings to Palm Springs a world class spa. With a competitive edge this 18-room spa , (the former Mediterranean Ballroom where the Glitterati once danced and pranced nearly a half century ago- and that means the likes of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn and Elvis) this Asian influence spa dances once again with curving corridors, lighting that can only be described as magical and treatments reflecting Balinese and Thai spa culture.

The brochure says “ all of our spa services are designed to replace the with of the world with a feeling of utter relaxation” – how timely this is. And how innovative to cultivate a new spa generation with Youth Salon Services for those twelve years old and younger in your life such as a Tutti-Fruti Manicure and Pedicure and a Little Miss Muffet Conditioning Treatment. For the upper generation there are serious spa services in the Global Rituals such as Cleopatra’s Milk Ritual ( $120 minutes/$250) and the Volcanic Earth Clay Ritual ( 90 minutes/$200). And there are the Couples’ Rooms where you can select from a choice of massages from Sacred Stone to the Native Desert Sage.
All services are subject to a 20 per cent gratuity. The stunning 406-room Riviera Resort has just debuted after a $70 million renovation resplendent in the retro inspired “Hollywood Regency Style”.
Just a hint: chocolate piping on white bedspreads-the new Riviera resonates with the glam of the 1960’s spiced with the vibrational tones of orange from the lobby to the pillow accents. Add a swirl shaped swimming pool, expensive dining at their signature restaurant, Circa 59 all reflecting 21st century hip. Guestrooms and ambiance are not exactly family friendly and I have a feeling while not putting up a sign, this is more of an adult destination. I can’t envision a baby stroller or kids darting around the lavish outdoor furnishings by the chic pool something of an every day occurrence.
